GEAR LIST for Central Indiana Adventure (12-hour)

CARRIED BY EACH PERSON AT ALL TIMES:

  • Backpack
  • Emergency Space Blanket
  • Food and Water
  • Hydration Bladder or Bottles (minimum 70 oz capacity)
  • Light source (in case of emergency)
  • Whistle

 

CARRIED BY ONE TEAM MEMBER AT ALL TIMES:

  • Compass
  • Duct Tape (minimum 5')
  • First Aid/ Safety Kit: Bandages, antibiotic ointment, electrolyte tablets
  • Knife (minimum 3" blade)
  • Pencil and Marker
  • Plotting Tool for UTM Coordinates on 1:25,000 (Example)
  • Sunscreen
  • Waterproof Map Case (zip lock bag OK, but we suggest double bagging)
  • Water purifier (Iodine Tablets or Filter)

 

WHILE CYCLING (EACH TEAM MEMBER)

  • Bicycle (mountain bike or cyclo-cross bike recommended)
  • Helmet
  • Rear Red Flashing Light (w/ extra batteries)
  • Inner Tube

 

WHILE CYCLING (ONE PER TEAM)

  • Tire Repair Kit: patches, tire levers, and pump
  • Tools: 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8mm Hex Wrenches; Small Philips & Straight Screwdrivers

 

WHILE CLIMBING / ROPES

All ropes gear will be provided for you if needed.

 

WHEN PADDLING

  • Paddles (canoe or kayak paddles OK) – we will have plenty of loaner canoe paddles (one blade) if you do not have your own.
  • PFD (lifejacket) – we will have plenty of loaner PFD’s if you do not have your own.

Canoe will be provided. We will be using two-seat, fiberglass Mohawk canoes. You may want to bring a "third seat" for your middle paddler if you are a team of three.

 

TECHNOLOGY

GPS features NOT ALLOWED: any GPS capable device that can display a map, coordinates, speed, OR distance. This includes smartphones with GPS ability and GPS running watches.

GPS features ALLOWED: GPS trackers that measure distance, speed, altitude, tracking for later review, with no screen.

Phones may be used for emergency calls or photo taking ONLY. Smartphones must be turned OFF except for emergency use. No use of navigation, social media, internet, calls for advice, etc. during the race.

Altimeters are allowed.

Bicycle computer / speedometers are allowed.

SUGGESTED ITEMS (NOT MANDATORY)

  • Waterproof bags (dry bags, plastic zip sandwich bags, etc)
  • Plotter for 1:15,000 and 1:10,000 scales
  • Headlamp
  • Long pants and/or gaiters (briar protection)
  • Extra socks
  • Additional first aid items
  • Cell phone (must be turned off it is GPS capable)
  • Insect Repellent
  • Trash bags
  • Bike lock (theft risk is low, but you may decide to drop your bike in unattended locations)
  • Hand sanitizer - for use before and after touching checkpoint punches, public interactions, etc.
